Dear PATA Chapter colleagues,

This week I’d like to take the opportunity to tell you all about PATA’s 2011 ‘Face of the Future’ competition, which will be a key component of our 60th anniversary activities. Each year the competition spotlights an individual who has worked to change or advance travel-and-tourism in the Asia Pacific region. This time however, we are bringing the competition to the forefront and putting the judging process in the hands of all PATA members.

Last month we sent a letter to each of PATA’s National Tourism Organisation (NTO) members, inviting them to participate in nominating their own candidate. Once received, submissions will be uploaded to www.PATA60.org to allow PATA members to cast their vote online. The website and online competition will be launched at this year’s PATA Travel Mart in Macau SAR, September 14-17, 2010.

The first round of voting will close on October 29, 2010 and the top five candidates will then be required to submit a video – of up to three-minutes in length – further detailing their experiences to date, and aspirations for the future. This will be uploaded for viewing on www.PATA60.org at the beginning of January, 2011. The final round of voting will be conducted by the PATA executive board members, with the winner and runners-up announced by March 1, 2010.

Of course, you’re all wondering about the prize. The winner will be rewarded with airfare, accommodation and delegate fee for the PATA 60th anniversary celebration and annual conference, which will be held from April 9-12, 2011, in Beijing. The two runners-up will be invited as guests, with accommodation and delegate fees only, covered.

How can the Chapters be a part of this competition? Well, with just under a month to go until the deadline (September 1, 2010) I encourage you to get your thinking caps on and consider who in your region best represents the future of tourism. Which individual stands out as someone you believe will be one of our industry’s leaders in five or ten years? If you have someone in mind, please contact your respective NTO with your nominee’s details or email fof2011@pata.org for more information. This is a great opportunity for you, the private sector, to work in partnership with your respective NTO and put forward a national candidate who truly represents the future of your destination.

Once the nominations are online, I urge you to encourage all PATA members in your Chapter to get voting. If you have any questions about ‘Face of the Future’, or anything else related to PATA’s 60th anniversary activities, feel free to contact Catherine Monthienvichienchai, PATA 60th anniversary project coordinator, at Catherine@pata.org.

Until next week then,

Ben Montgomery
